Seeing as how it’s 2024 and the Internet reigns supreme, having high-quality, current headshots is vital to your career. And it doesn’t matter what your job is, either! It used to be that real estate agents and corporate finance leaders were the only ones required to have such images taken, but today everyone benefits from improving their online presence.
Headshots allow you to put your best face forward — literally! Whether you’ve already got a headshot session booked or contemplating having one done, the guidelines below will help you prepare more adequately.
Reasons Why You Need Headshots
It allows your clients or potential business partners to know you before they meet you. As stated above, a well-done headshot will convey who you are! Your expression says it all, and we will ensure it shows your personality.
It shows how professional you are. A well-done headshot conveys your business intentions and makes you more approachable regarding potential clients, investors, etc.
Your headshot can be used for many things, from custom proposals to social media. We can even take multiple shots with different expressions and outfits so you can use them on various platforms!
Consider it a worthwhile investment. You are investing in yourself, your branding, if you will. I promise your investment will pay for itself quickly.
Relevancy, it's a simple as that. A professional headshot keeps you up to date! I recommend updating them often.
Preparing for the Branding Experience
We’ll work closely with you to ensure that your personal branding session goes smoothly and that your images demonstrate who you are. That said, here are some things to consider as you prepare for your own personal branding session:
Wear Clothing That’s Flattering, Modest, and Neutral
There’s a time and a place for that leopard print top or crazy tie, but your headshots will usually require a different aesthetic. We recommend neutral, modest articles of clothing that you feel comfortable in and that are flattering to your complexion and features. Clothing should also be clean and freshly pressed.
Bring a Second Outfit
You’ll likely want variety in choosing your favourite headshot images, so bring a second or third outfit to the session.
Bring Props That Represent Your Business
We won’t use a prop for every photograph, but if your business involves specific tools or products, then it’s ideal for including them in some images. For example, if you’re a photographer, you’d want to bring a camera. If you’re a jewelry designer, then wear your favourite pieces. If you’re a winemaker, bring a few bottles and a nice glass.
Brainstorm Locations That Fit Your Business and Personality
We’ll most likely want to get a mix of neutral locations and then a space that represents your business. If you’re a restauranteur, images at your restaurant would be perfect. We’ll want to shoot at your studio if you're a potter. If your career is less nuanced, then neutral locations will be great.
Think About Your Personal Style
For personal branding images, we want to zero in on your personal style. If you’re a brewmaster or a woodworker, you’ll probably want to opt for a slightly elevated casual look. If you’re the founder of a high-tech smartphone app, maybe a pressed shirt and bowtie or a well-tailored a-line power dress is better. We can work with you to help you figure out the perfect outfit.
Keep Accessories to a Minimum
This is a headshot, so we don’t want to detract from your face. Too much jewelry can lead the eye elsewhere, so it’s best to stick to small, modest pieces if you wear any accessories.
Have Your Hair/Makeup Done Professionally
If you are looking for an excuse to get a haircut, blowout, or professional makeup, this is it! Not only does handing that responsibility off to someone else reduce your burden on picture day, but it ensures that you look and feel incredible. (Just a note: light retouching is standard in all of our headshot images. Don’t fret about that zit.)
Make Sure Hair is Out of Your Face
This goes along with the last point, but you’ll want to keep hair out of your face to ensure we get a good shot. If you have bangs, they should be trimmed, and if you have long hair that tends to get in the way, you may want to clip some of it back or tuck it behind your ears.
Determine the Ideal Backdrop
Many clients prefer to have their images taken at either their business location, home office, or neutral background. Together we can help determine the best place to do your headshots but do think about the general aesthetic you’re going for and relay that to your photographer.
